After a one day off, we decided to discover the island at our own. We rented 2 scooters (150,000 VND – 7.5 USD per scooter per day). The rented scooters are usually without fuel so we needed to visit the petrol station, 1 liter of petrol = 24750 VND per liter.
We used offline map from the application CityMaps2go – South Vietnam and started our tour.
It was fun to ride, to adjust to local customs and use often horn. At first glance it seems quite dangerous to drive a scooter on island but after few minutes one can realize it is not so bad. After all people don’t drive too fast, on average they drive 50-60 km/h. We drove close to the international airport of Phu Quoc Island.
After few kilometers, the road
changed from the asphalt one to the more harsh. One could see that the new road to the south was under construction.
We drove to the white-sand beach, Sao Beach. The road to the beach was very bumpy. We stopped to buy some drinks at the stall. There are plenty of stalls along the road. We bought 4 cans for 2 USD.
The Sao Beach was very nice, we went to swim, the sea was very calm comparing to the sea at the Long Beach. Sao Beach was located on the South-western part of the island. At our stay on the island there was mainly the wind blowing from the west. The water seemed nice but Jessa’s silver bracelet turned black after a short swim there. The reason was unknown.
We decided to eat there, since there was a restaurant and there was plenty of people. Unfortunately the food was awful, the fish (fried mackerel was not so tasty and grilled shrimps seemed to be not well-cooked).
The second part of the day, we visited the one of the many former American prisons on the island.
Later we drove to the most southern part of the island, namely to An Thoi. It was interesting to observe how was the life in the city.
The way back passed faster. At the end of the journey we went to the city, Duong Dong to find a bank. There were the ratio for USD. For 1 USD =21,100 VND. You can pay in dollars at Phu Quoc, but the locals they give you the 20,000 VND for 1 USD. We bought some local food, we paid 80,000 VND.
At the end of the day we want to the restaurant ‘Let’s try’ to eat Vietnamese food.
